Stained Glass Windows
St Bride’s has been fortunate to have had so many generous benefactors over the years who have provided the funding for most of the beautiful stained glass windows seen around the church. The Representative Church Body based in Dublin oversees the running of all Church of Ireland churches and in the past two or three years a project was carried out to photograph and record details of all stained glass windows in every church on the island of Ireland. St Bride’s had a photographer visit and now all of the windows can be seen on the Church of Ireland website. As well as a photograph of each window there are details of the designer, when installed, patronage and iconography. A whole new vocabulary opens up in the description of the window with terms like lancets, quatrefoils, trefoils and tracery-lights being commonly used. The detail will be of great interest to everyone. Follow the link below to see St Bride’s windows and then try the other two links to see St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast and St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh. Click on each window image for more information.
There is also an excellent search facility on the website to allow the windows of other churches to be viewed, it’s well worth exploring.
